Partners creative thinkers and makers with progressive studios.

In almost every conversation I have with architects, from recent Part 2s to experienced Associates, the same question comes up: should I be a generalist or a specialist? It’s a significant career crossroad. At the same time, I speak with practices that are struggling to find someone with a very particular set of skills for a new project.

From where I stand, I see a clear trend. While a broad base of experience will always be valuable, the demand for deep, focused expertise is growing rapidly. The age of the specialist architect is here, and it presents a huge opportunity for both individuals and practices.

For Architects: Why Carving Out a Niche Makes Sense

Deciding to specialise can feel like you're closing doors, but I often see the opposite happen. Focusing on a specific area can open up more interesting, rewarding, and senior opportunities.

Here’s what I’m seeing for architects who develop a specialism:

  • You become highly sought-after: Practices are not just looking for another architect; they are often looking for the architect for a specific job. When a practice needs someone with experience in designing secure data centres or sterile healthcare environments, they will actively seek out that expertise. This puts you in a much stronger position.

  • A clearer path for progression: When you are the go-to person for heritage conservation or modular construction within a practice, your value is clear. This expertise can accelerate your journey to a senior or leadership role, as you become essential to winning and delivering specific types of work.

  • Deeper job satisfaction: Focusing on an area you are genuinely passionate about leads to more engaging work. Mastering the complexities of a sector, whether it's the technical demands of a data centre design architect or the sensitive approach needed for listed buildings, is incredibly fulfilling.

High-Demand Specialisms I'm Seeing Right Now

If you're considering where to focus, some sectors are particularly active. These are just a few examples of niche architectural careers that are currently in high demand:

  • Healthcare Architecture: This requires a deep understanding of clinical needs, technical standards, and patient wellbeing. With ongoing investment in hospitals and care facilities, healthcare architecture jobs are consistently available for those with the right experience.

  • Data Centres: A booming, highly technical field. It’s less about aesthetics and more about security, cooling, and resilience. It's a challenging but very rewarding niche.

  • Modular Construction: As the industry pushes for greater efficiency and sustainability, architects with experience in off-site manufacturing and modular design are becoming invaluable.

  • Heritage and Conservation: This requires a unique blend of technical knowledge, historical understanding, and a delicate design touch. Accredited conservation architects are always in short supply.

For Practices: How to Attract the Specialist Talent You Need

I know from speaking with my clients that finding these specialists can be a real challenge. They are in high demand and often aren't actively looking for a new role. So, how do you make your practice the one they choose?

  • Be specific in your job description: Go beyond the standard list of responsibilities. If you need someone with experience in RIBA Stage 4 for hospital projects, say so. If specific software knowledge is essential, list it. The best candidates want to see that you know exactly what you're looking for.

  • Showcase your specialist projects: Experts want to work on interesting, challenging projects with other experts. Make sure your website and any materials you share clearly highlight your best work in that sector. This shows you are serious about the field.

  • Demonstrate a commitment to their growth: What does the future look like for a specialist at your practice? Will you support them in gaining conservation accreditation? Will they have the opportunity to lead a new data centre team? A clear path for development is a powerful incentive.

  • Talk specifics on the offer: Instead of just saying 'flexible working', state your policy, for example, '2 days working from home and flexible start and finish times around core hours of 10 am to 4 pm'. This clarity builds trust and shows you respect their time.

Ultimately, the rise of specialisation is a positive move for the industry. It allows architects to build deeply rewarding careers and enables practices to deliver projects of exceptional quality and complexity.

If you are an architect thinking about your next step or considering a move into a more specialist field, I would be happy to talk through the current market for specialist architect jobs.

Equally, if you are a practice looking to find that key person with a unique set of skills, let’s have a conversation about how we can connect you with the right talent.
